The eye is right off the coast from where I live in S Florida and we've been getting some of the rain/wind bands coming through today. Check out this website for good info, I hope the people in the northeast who live near the water understand how severe storm surge can be...

I lived in Miami for 13 years and i can't enough about Jeff Masters' website. I would definitely recommend it for anyone tracking this. It has all the NHC info and more. If LiA did weather blogs, it would read like wunderground.

All you mid-Atlantic and Northeast folks take all the necessary precautions (stock water, food and fill the gas tanks on your cars, extra beer is never a bad idea). If you have a generator make sure it works and make sure you have gas. During Katrina and Wilma in Florida, the gas stations didn't have power. I had to drive 60 miles south to get gas after day 3 following Wilma. I think they all have backup generators now but that might not be the case up north. If you have a gas grill, make sure you have propane. We lived off the grill for a week following Wilma. And if you are in an evacuation zone, leave. It is inconvenient but its better than dying.

Good luck to all who are in Irene's path.

Make sure you have any needed medications, including pets' medications. Remember to include the pets in the food and water calculations ... do all the laundry, and charge the ipod!
